Ware Cup 2022 – race details

The postponed 2022 Ware Cup, hosted by Loughton AC, will take place on Saturday 28 January 2023 at Roding Valley Recreation Ground in Loughton.

A large group of runners some dressed in hats and gloves and in club kit set off across a field at the start of a race
Ware Cup start 11 December 2021

We look forward to welcoming runners from local clubs. The course is a short walk from Loughton Underground Station so we encourage runners to arrive by public transport where possible. There is limited free parking on nearby streets (Highwood Lane, Roding Road, Alderton Hall Lane), a small free car park at the bottom of Roding Road by the recreation ground and a car park at Sainsburys.

Schedule

The club house will open for changing, storage of kit and to pick up numbers shortly after 10am. Contributions of £3 (adults) and £1 (children) are requested.

Hot drinks and cakes will be available. Please bring a keep cup if you can to minimise waste.

The race programme is:

  • 11am – U11 / U13 (up to and including year 8) c1.5km. Minimum age 9

  • 11.15am – U15/17 (years 9-12, c5km) and Seniors (c7.8km)

Course

The course will be similar to previous years (and the Interclub Vets). The start is adjacent to the Loughton AC clubhouse.

Seniors run approximately 7.8km beginning with a lap on the recreation ground before crossing a narrow concrete bridge to complete two laps on the other side of the river through the nature reserve. Then return over the bridge to finish near the clubhouse.

U15 and U17 competitors run about 5km following the same course as the seniors but just one lap through the nature reserve. Marshals will direct runners back over the bridge after their first lap while senior runners continue on their second lap.

U11 and U13 athletes run a one lap course of about 1.5km round the recreation ground (with a short steep uphill section) and do not cross the river,

Conditions are likely to be muddy or wet in places. Spikes or studs are recommended especially for U15, U17 and senior runners.

Entries and teams

Team Managers have been sent entry forms to be returned by Saturday 21 January. Additional runners can be added on the day. Please try to avoid this to keep things manageable.

Teams of four will score in the Women’s and Men’s competitions (youth categories will depend on numbers but likely three to score). We hope to announce the team results on the day and will share full results later.

Last year's results are at loughtonac.org.uk/winter-2021-22

The Ware Cup trophies will be awarded to the winning men's and women's teams. Both trophies are currently held by Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets AC.

If you can provide a marshal that would be appreciated.

We look forward to seeing you.
