Loughton AC ‘Lifts the Curfew’ to Promote Safe Winter Runs

Loughton AC hosted its third ‘Lift the Curfew’ run on Monday night.

The initiative is part of a nationwide effort to enable women to feel safe while running in the dark evenings. Running clubs across the country took part in ‘Lift the Curfew’ runs to coincide with the clocks changing in October. As passionate advocates of ‘running for fun’ and supporters of female athletics and running in general, Loughton AC decided to continue highlighting the issue monthly throughout winter.

Sharon and Steve Palmer, organisers of Monday’s run, said: ‘Half of Loughton AC’s members are female. We also have a large group of teenage girls at the club. They all have a right to feel safe while they’re out training. We want to support them - and all females in our community - to run in the dark without fear.’

They went on: ‘We recognise the role of male allies in this, and our male membership are keen to do what they can in support and solidarity.’

Loughton AC offers group training on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Sunday mornings all year round.

Sharon said: ‘Running in groups, or with a buddy, is our number 1 tip - along with wearing hi-visibility clothing, and/or lights.

‘Choose a well-lit route and avoid unlit areas. If you tend to run early in the morning or late at night, be extra vigilant because drivers might be less alert at these times of the day. You could also share your location with someone you trust before heading out for a run. Message this person once you’ve completed it.’

Steve added: ‘Part of male allyship is understanding the scale of the issue: 70% of women in the UK have experienced sexual harassment in public places. I’m sure many men are aware of these tips but there are things we can do to make women feel safer: if you are near a lone woman then give her plenty of space physically. If you have to overtake closely while running, then tell the woman you’re doing so - in a friendly way. Nod or say hello to women out alone but nothing more, and no gestures.

‘Have conversations with your male friends about how unsafe women feel and how we can work together to improve this. We can call out any sexist behaviour, and if we see a woman in a threatening situation try to help by intervening without escalating the situation. Perhaps distract the perpetrator or ask for help from nearby people.’

Loughton AC hopes to fit in one more ‘Lift the Curfew’ run before the clocks go forward in March. Watch this space - and do join us to keep highlighting safe running in Loughton.
